Transferring Credits

Rules for Transferring Credits

You may transfer graduate credits from another university into any of our three degree programs. Technically, the graduate school allows students to transfer up to 40 percent of the coursework credits you need here, subject to DGS approval.  The standard number the department recommends for transfer is 12 semester credits (or four courses).

The credits you wish to transfer must have been taken after you completed your baccalaureate.

The credits may fulfill any requirement--i.e., Foundational, Distributional, Emphasis, or Supporting Program.

Transfer credits are first recorded on the department's Operational and Advising Record and then on the Graduate School's Degree Program Form.

Generally, it does not matter how long ago you took the graduate courses.

If the transfer course was intended for mixed graduate and undergraduate students, your transcript needs to say "for graduate credit," or you need to get a letter confirming as much from your professor or other administrator.

What You Need to Do

Propose in writing which courses you wish to transfer, the grade you earned, and which Minnesota course requirement each transfer course fulfills. If the course was not in an English department, write two sentences about which of our courses it approximates.

Ensure we have the relevant transcript(s) on file.

The Next Step

The DGS will decide if your proposal makes sense, but DGS approval is subject to approval by the Graduate School.

When you file your Degree Program Form, the Graduate School will check the transcripts they have on file to confirm the DGS recommendation.
